For four weeks in June and July, the ICAA's headquarters in New York City welcomes twenty students and professionals from across the country for the Summer Studio in Classical ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½. The Summer Studio incorporates lectures, field drawing, site visits, hand drafting, and watercolor rendering in an intensive program that instructs attendees in the principles and applications of classical architecture, and culminates in a design project for a new classical building.
In interviews, participants described how the program opened their eyes to classical architecture, and gave them a new appreciation of timeless design in the built environment.
"These are the foundational skills of the practice of architecture, whatever style of architecture you might practice - hand drafting, coordination, composition on the scale of an individual drawing or even a detail or a whole building or multiple buildings, a city [. . .] The classical skills of proportion and order are totally relevant to all aspects of the practice of architecture and design, as are the classical orders themselves, whether or not you use them in your work." – Charles Shafer, Summer Studio instructor and senior architect at Andrew Skurman Architects
