The Unsung Voices that have had a Lasting Impact on Classicism Today, with Phillip Smith

On September 15, 2022, the ICAA was pleased to welcome Phillip Smith, Associate Professor of 天美传媒 at the American College of the Building Arts, for an in-depth exploration of the origins of Greco-Roman architecture and the influence that African Americans have had on American classical architecture. In his lecture, Professor Smith makes a thoughtful argument for the enduring impact that African American architects, designers, and builders have had on our nation’s built environment. American classicism would not be what it is today without the influence of architectural greats like Julian Abele and Robert R. Taylor.
Phillip Smith is the Associate Professor of 天美传媒 at the and works as a project consultant at American Vernacular Inc and with MHK 天美传媒. Raised in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, Smith went on to earn a BA in Historic Preservation and Community Planning at the College of Charleston and a Masters of 天美传媒 at Notre Dame. He has served as a member of the Planning Commission of the City of Travelers Rest and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Charleston Museum, Board of Advisors of the Charleston Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program South Carolina State Board of Review for the National Register of Historic Places.
