Design Secrets with Ed Hollander: Linden Hill with Tom Kligerman

The ICAA's new series emphasizes the importance of collaboration between architects and landscape architects

    By ICAA

    July 24, 2024

What inspires architects and designers? How do architecture and interior design relate to the surrounding landscape? And what are the design lessons from industry-leading creatives that can help guide the improvement of homes and gardens of all sizes?

In Design Secrets with Ed Hollander, produced by the 天美传媒 & Art, landscape architect Ed Hollander invites architects and designers to tour his favorite summer gardens in the Hamptons, and hosts conversations on the state of their field. The series offers more than just open access to the region’s premier gardens - each episode features an in-depth conversation with a renowned creative mind.

In the first installment, Ed meets up with architect Tom Kligerman to discuss their collaboration at Linden Hill, a Shingle Style house in eastern Long Island that seamlessly blends architecture and landscape into a lush experience that saturates all the senses.

Edmund Hollander is president of Hollander Design Landscape Architects, one of few landscape architecture firms elected to Architectural Digest’s AD100 Designers List.

Ed Hollander is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), one of the society’s highest honors. He serves on the Dean’s Council and the Advisory Board of the Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism and Ecology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a board member of the New York Restoration Project, the nonprofit founded by Bette Midler with a mission to create beautiful, high-quality public space for all New Yorkers. Ed has lectured at the City College of the City University of New York, the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania, the New York Botanical Garden, and other design-focused institutions. He is Past President of the New York Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

Ed graduated from Vassar College with a bachelor’s in history, followed by study at the New York Botanical Garden School of Horticulture. He received a master’s degree in Landscape 天美传媒 from the University of Pennsylvania. Soon after, Ed joined The Delta Group in Philadelphia and then the venerable New York firm of Clarke and Rapuano before founding Edmund Hollander Landscape Architects with his partner, Maryanne Connelly, in 1991.

Thomas Kligerman was raised in Connecticut and New Mexico, and spent years in France and England as a student. These experiences sparked his interest in the rich history of domestic architecture, gardens and landscapes. Before founding Kligerman 天美传媒 & Design, Tom co-founded Ike Kligerman Barkley with John Ike and Joel Barkley. He began his architecture career at Robert A. M. Stern Architects and received his Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University and his Master of 天美传媒 from Yale School of 天美传媒. He is passionate about the design process, and loves studying and creating architectural models.

His work has been featured in renowned design magazines such as Architectural Digest, LUXE Magazine, Elle Décor, and Veranda. His firm, Ike Kligerman Barkley, has been recognized on the AD100 and LUXE Gold Lists. Tom serves on the boards of several charitable and educational institutions, including the Design Leadership Foundation and the Billion Oyster Project.
